Sewed up with eight stitches

That was sure a weekend to forget. Yesterday while in a very promising position, I was involved in mass crash, so that my race was over and today the bad luck struck me again.

I was in the group with all the favourites. You could say: everything going well. Then suddenly a strong wave went through the group, from front to back. A teammate of mine then got hung up with the rider in front of him and I ran right over him, and did three somersaults before unfortunately braking with my face. I noticed it was pretty bloody, but got back on the bike and kept going.

You know me, I’m tough. But the career in the auto said I couldn’t continue, the wound was gaping too much and I had to go to hospital right away. It was pretty embarrassing to be transported with blinking lights and all. But that was less because of my injury than because the ambulance was needed at the race and the paramedics had to get back as soon as possible. So we told some jokes underway, and that way I at least got something positive out of it.

The injury won’t really have any effect on me. I think that I can train as usual. My form is really quite good, the race today showed me that. Now I will get on a plane, go home and prepare for Paris-Nice and the other Classics.
