Elite world time trial champion 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016, in addition to that gold at the team time trial world championship 2012, 2016 and silver at the olympics 2012. Who would have thought that when I started cycling in 1999, quite late at the age of 14? I would have been the last one. Maybe I was dreaming a bit of that. This is why I am living like in a dream that has come true.
It started all at RSV Sossenheim, the club where I made my first steps on the bike. During the two years at my next club RSV Seeheim, I could celebrate several titles at regional championships and the first big victory in the jersey of the German national team: the TMP Tour. As the training load got heavier during my junior days, I had the chance to go to a sports academy school in Erfurt. Now riding for RSC Turbine Erfurt, I got the perfect opportunity to combine school and racing at a high level. I was doing the national junior race series with Team Thüringen and then made the step to TEAG Team Köstritzer, a U23 team that later became the Thüringer Energie Team.
The U23 time was not only really successful but also really exciting. This is the time when you as a young athlete see if you can make the step to become professional or not. This is why I took the opportunity to learn the job of policeman and due to the support of the German government, I got the chance to combine education and sports perfectly. So a professional career outside of cycling would have been assured if I had not made it to become a pro rider. But after the good results such as my win at the Thüringen Rundfahrt it all took its course and the story still continues to be written!
My first contact with a pro team was in my second year as a U23 when I could ride the Regio Tour for Team Gerolsteiner and I could win the mountain time trial there. After successful U23 years, I joined my first pro team in 2008 with Team Highroad, later Team HTC-Highroad. As of 2012 I rode for the team Etixx-QuickStep (2012-2014 Omega Pharma-QuickStep), where I spent five successful years and felt well all the way through 2016. In 2017, however, it was time for me to make a change. I went to Team Katusha Alpecin where I find the optimal conditions to further my development again.
